Kevin O'Malley insists he's a ‘poor, shy Irishman.'
His success as a banking executive recruiter says otherwise.
Sterling Staffing founder and president Kevin O'Malley, MA, SPHR, had an early introduction to the commercial world. He launched his first business as a shoeshine boy when he was just 10 years old.“I would go out to the bars and shine other people's shoes for 25 cents,” he remembers. “It paid for bread and milk and even then I had to compete with other kids working the same bars. Nothing has changed. Competition is still competition.”
Those humble beginnings are part of who Kevin is today: a down-to-earth guy with a finely honed wit and a competitive zest for doing the best he can for his clients. And like most successful entrepreneurs he's a bit of a gabber and none too shy. Especially when he talks about the hard-knocks business lessons he's learned over the years.“Back then I just kept looking ahead to the next job, one shoe at a time. I have the same mind-set today. I handle one candidate, one client at a time,” he says.
Those candidates are some of the best in the banking business. And that's no surprise. Kevin keeps a tight focus on tracking top talent. His database of smart, motivated banking industry professionals is always growing. So when a position opens up he's able to make the perfect match—fast. Kevin is accredited as a Senior Professional Human Resource manager. He also has a master's degree in counseling. These professional-level people skills serve him well when he chats with candidates about a career at your company.
Kevin also knows the ins and outs of business. He's personally started up, developed—and sold—multimillion-dollar corporations (one that he started with a roll of dimes and a phone booth). But he found he couldn't sit still after selling his previous business to an international staffing firm. The entrepreneurial itch pulled him out of retirement and he started Sterling Staffing.
In just a few short years Sterling Staffing has become a Northeast powerhouse, attracting banking clients from throughout region as well as sections of the Southeast. Not bad for a poor, shy Irishman who started out shining shoes. And for Kevin, it's still one customer at a time—and doing everything he can to make them shine.
